Look at this pic.the womans face is content but happy as if she feels safe wrapping her arms around his not feeling a care or worry in the world as she almost tries to comfort him.Now Look at the facial expression of the man,He looks uninterested not at ease of something that is going through his mind like he had did something that he regreted afterwards.

I can't read the language, but having spent time in China, acting aloof, prideful, unattached is wide spread and somewhat popular, even promoted attitude. That doesn't keep couples from being great for each other. But then, I haven't read the manga so I'm not sure of their history. Only what I see.
