This car is very interesting! It is a joint production between Subaru and Toyota, and the final product is to be marketed under 3 brands, under Toyota as the Toyota 86 (FT-86, FT-86 G-Sports, and FT-86 II), under Subaru as the Subaru BRZ STI, and under Scion as the Scion FR-S.
Conceptual Models have been around since 2009 and actual commercial production started this year in 2012 under the 3 names. It is interesting to note that Toyota named their version Toyota 86, pronounced in japanese as hachi-roku, and a homage to the famous Toyota AE86, the Sprinter Tureno (Corolla Levin) of Initial-D fame. Apparently the original hachi-roku also served as an inspiration to the Toyota 86's design.
Another interesting fact about this car lies in the Subaru model, the BRZ STI. The BRZ STI is the second car made by Subaru in its 58 year existence to ever have an FR layout. The first was the Subaru 1500, the first car ever made by Subaru in 1954.
